Dr. Dan E. Davidson, President Emeritus and Co-Founder of American Councils, helped shape the field of international education through a career dedicated to language, culture, research, and academic exchange.
From American Councils' earliest exchanges across the Iron Curtain to its growth into a global organization supporting programs in critical languages and world regions, Dr. Davidson's leadership expanded access to immersive language learning while strengthening the role of international education in public diplomacy and cross-cultural understanding.
As Director of the American Councils Research Center and one of the leading scholars of second language acquisition, Dr. Davidson has continued advancing research showing that true language mastery comes through immersion, cultural engagement, and meaningful experience abroad.

I applied for the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship as a means to afford my study abroad program. To this end, the fellowship has supported my language learning journey by allowing me the opportunity to travel to Tajikistan, take intensive courses, live with a host family, and altogether become immersed in Persian language and culture.
